Indigestion

Indigestion is often related to a "stomach problem" such as a hiatus hernia, ulcer, gallstone, etc. It may be triggered by eating certain foods and may be noticeable after mealtime or when laying down to nap or sleep. However, on some occasions patients with heart disease may describe episodes of "indigestion"  occurring either during or following an activity.  These types of symptoms should always raise the suspicion of a cardiac problem. This may create problems for the patient if they happen to mistake activity related symptoms as being "heartburn" and self medicate it with over the counter antacids. Doing so may cause unnecessary delay of appropriate treatment of their heart problem.  Any uncertainty can be cleared up by speaking with your physician

Dizzy spells

Dizzy spells may be caused by problems with the heart, as well the vestibular system, the neurological system, the blood chemistry, in addition to some other possible causes. When dizziness is caused by a heart problem, it may be due to an abnormality in the rhythm , the  valves, the pumping muscle function, the blood pressure, in addition to some other possible causes.  Excessively slow heart beating may require a pacemaker to be implanted. Excessively fast heart beating may require medication and/or an ablation procedure to be administered. An unusually low blood pressure can sometimes be due to medications. Some of the causes of dizziness are extremely important and need to be treated urgently. So, it is best not to delay assessment when new symptoms appear. Your physician is trained to identify the exact cause of this problem

Ankle swelling

Ankle swelling can occur when the leg veins are abnormal and don't  efficiently return the blood  to the heart. As a result of the back-up of blood in the legs, the extra blood volume causes fluid to accumulate in the tissues of the legs and patients may notice swelling of their ankles or even their shins and calves. There are other possible causes of ankle swelling which include medication side effects, a localized blood clot, arthritis in the ankle, heart failure, liver disease,  among other possible causes. Some of the causes of ankle swelling are extremely important and need to be treated urgently. So, it is best not to delay assessment when new symptoms appear. Your physician is trained to identify the exact cause of this problem

Skipped or Racing Heart Beats

Patients with an irregular heart rhythm may sometimes sense this abnormality as a skipped (or irregular) heart beat or as an abrupt onset racing heart beat which may occur without reason. This symptom may be mimicked by other disorders including an abnormal thyroid, blood chemistry changes , anxiety, among other possible causes. Some of the causes are extremely important and need to be treated urgently. So, it is best not to delay assessment when new symptoms appear. Your physician is trained to identify the exact cause of this problem

Leg cramps

Leg cramps that occur during walking raise the possibility of peripheral vascular disease. When you use your legs, these muscles require increased blood flow so that they may receive extra nutrients and energy to work  and so that the blood may carry away the increased levels of toxic metabolites which may be produced in the muscle as a result of the muscle activity. Consequently, when there are blockages in the leg arteries, and the increased blood flow requirements cannot be provided to the leg muscles during an increased level of activity, then the patient may feel muscle cramping while walking. Unfortunately, there are other diseases which may also present with activity related leg cramps which may include nerve root compression and spinal stenosis among other possible causes.  Some of the causes of these types of leg cramps are extremely important and need to be treated urgently. So, it is best not to delay assessment when new symptoms appear. Your physician is trained to identify the exact cause of this problem

CLINICAL SYMPTOMS

Shortness of Breath

Patients may feel short of breath when they have a problem either with their lungs, their heart,  their gastrointestinal system, or their blood chemistry in addition to some other possible causes. Almost any type of heart disease may present with shortness of breath and it can manifest either during activity or even at rest. Some of the causes are extremely important and need to be treated urgently. So, it is best not to delay assessment when new symptoms appear. Your physician is trained to identify the exact cause of this problem

Chest Pain

Patients may feel chest pain when they have a problem either with their lungs, their heart, their gastrointestinal system, their musculoskeletal system, in addition to some other possible causes. The pattern and character of the pain and the context in which it occurs can be helpful to the doctor in sorting out the actual cause. Some of the causes are extremely important and need to be treated urgently. So, it is best not to delay assessment when new symptoms appear.
